The nonprofit and no-kill shelter, Friends for Life, located in Gilbert, is partnering with a Chandler vehicle dealership for a microchipping event.
The bi-annual "Microchip-a-Thon" will be from 8-10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Subaru Superstore, 1050 S. Gilbert Road, Chandler.
Pet owners throughout the East Valley can take advantage of free microchips for dogs or cats, free DAPP vaccines for any dog that needs one, and two separate cat vaccines.
The community-wide event is made possible by a grant from the ASPCA, as well as Subaru Loves Pets and Subaru.
DAPP is a vaccine and booster for dogs to help prevent parvo and canine distemper, which are highly contagious and causes death in 50% of adult dogs and 80% of puppies, according to a news release. DAPP also prevents canine hepatitis and canine influenza, it states.
The two cat vaccines being offered include FelloCell3, which prevents upper respiratory problems, feline herpes and panleukopenia. The survival rate for an adult unvaccinated cat with panleukopenia is 20%-30% if they’re hospitalized, and is lower for kittens.
The second cat vaccine is FELV, which prevents feline leukemia.
Anyone who wants these services must be in line by 10 a.m. Contact Friends for Life at 480-497-8296 or info@azfriends.org with questions.
This event is for walkups only; no pre-registration or appointments will be made or required.
Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a proper, standard carrier.
There's a maximum of four animals per household. Anyone bringing in 3 or 4 animals must have two accompanying adults present to help handle them.
The release states that Friends for Life Animal Rescue is a registered, nonprofit, no-kill, volunteer-based organization that focuses on rescuing stray animals from the streets and the rural desert areas of Arizona communities.
