Surprise pumps money back into community groups

Nonprofits earn grants that help local programs, events

When the three Surprise city councilmembers who make up the Subcommittee on Community Outreach, Partnerships and Grants met for eight hours June 5 to divvy up $150,000 of grant money to local nonprofits, one of them said it did not feel like a long day.

“We have so many great people in the city that are just looking to do good things for other people in the city,” said Councilmember Chris Judd, the subcommittee’s chair, to the rest of the council on Aug. 6.

Judd and Councilmembers Nick Haney and Patrick Duffy listened to presentations from 57 organizations and gathered together again on June 11 to vote on how to disperse the money the city has made available through its Surprise Community Outreach Program.
