Benbow: Fan control an issue

Posted

It is so typical of a group of people who have given themselves unfettered power to make poor decisions and expect those who will be affected to just deal with it. Such is the case with the RCSC board’s decision to remove the individual fan controllers.

I was at the Bell (Recreation) Center on a reclining cycler. When I got on it, the fan overhead was on. After a while, I was feeling quite warm and looked up to see that the fan was off. I had to get off of the cycler (interrupting my exercise process) and walk to the office to inquire why the fan was off. A staff member flipped a switch and all of the fans came back on. There was no apology for turning them off in the first place.

One switch controls the fans over all of the western-most equipment (weight machines, treadmills and reclining cyclers). I wondered what would happen if someone came in and wanted the fan over them turned off. Would the staff member turn the fans off, despite the fact that I asked to have the fan over me on? What are staff members supposed to do is such a situation arises? Did the short-sighted RCSC board think of that when they made their thoughtless decision?
