Phoenix police have identified Ashley Vailes, 19, as the victim in a Thursday collision that involved a Phoenix Police Department vehicle.
The crash occurred about 9 a.m. Dec. 21 at the intersection of 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road. A police officer was transporting a prisoner in a marked vehicle at the time of the collision, authorities said.
After the collision the victim’s vehicle hit a pole and caught fire.
The Phoenix Fire Department put out the fire. Vailes was pronounced dead.
The officer and prisoner were both transported to local hospitals and are both expected to survive.
Preliminary information indicates the officer was making a southbound turn onto 35th Avenue from traveling westbound on Thunderbird Road. The other vehicle was traveling east on Thunderbird.
