Tempe-based Salt River Project to present the latest information regarding the Coronado Generating Station as part of its efforts to review opportunities to utilize the existing infrastructure associated with the station.
According to a press release, SRP commissioned a repurposing study from Kiewit to identify low- and zero-carbon technologies to be implemented at the CGS site by spring 2033. The Coronado Generating Station, located in St. Johns, Ariz., is scheduled to be retired no later than Dec. 31, 2032, as part of SRP’s strategy to meet its 2035 Sustainability Goals.
SRP will host a community event in St. Johns to provide an update on the results of these studies. The presentation on the CGS takes place Thursday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Johns High School.
SRP is also reviewing the findings of a separate study from Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear, a U.S. Department of Energy initiative, on the feasibility of advanced nuclear generation at the CGS site.
The event will include presentations from SRP and GAIN and will then provide open-house-style informational stations for community members to review.
SRP is committed to supporting the city of St. Johns, Apache County and nearby, impacted communities reliant on the Coronado Generating Station as they shift their economic strategies and develop sustainable, strategic and diverse economies, the release stated.
