Turf Paradise takes step toward selling — if it continues as a racetrack is up to buyer

Turf Paradise took a step toward selling last week, but the future of the property is still up in the air.

Phoenix City Council approved zoning changes 7-0 last week for 26 acres of the 213-acre property, which the current owner hopes will help the property sell. For the time being, racing continues at the track that has hosted horse racing since 1956. Whether the property continues to host horse racing beyond this year depends on who buys it and their plans.

Paul Gilbert, a development lawyer representing Turf Paradise owner Jerry Simms, told the Daily Independent that racing is underway for the spring season and will return for the Fall 2024 season.
