INDEPENDENT NEWSMEDIA
Daniel Davitt has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for killing a Maricopa County detention officer.
Davitt, 63, killed Gene Lee, a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detention officer, in October 2019 and was convicted of manslaughter. He was sentenced June 2.
Davitt already was in custody, serving time for molestation, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
In an attack caught on video, Davitt grabbed Lee by the throat and swept his legs from under him causing the officer to strike his head on the floor of the county jail, MCAO officials said in a release. Lee died a day later.
“Officer Gene Lee was a public servant who devoted his life to protecting our community," Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said.
"It is a travesty for his life to have ended in this way, and I can only imagine the depths of the sorrow his family is experiencing.”
