ASU president condemns Turning Point USA actions; TPUSA alleges crew 'attacked'

Posted

Arizona State University President Michael Crow on Saturday condemned Turning Point USA for the conservative group’s role during an incident last week when an ASU professor was injured on campus.

“Earlier this week, Dr. David Boyles, an instructor in the ASU English Department, was followed, harassed, pushed and injured by two men identified by Turning Point USA as their ‘reporter’ and ‘cameraman,’ Crow said in a statement.

Boyles, who teaches a class on LGBTQ+ youth in pop culture and is co-founder of Drag Story Hour in Arizona, was being asked questions by a member of the Turning Point following his Wednesday class on ASU’s Tempe campus when the incident occurred.

Turning Point USA stated on a social media site that Boyles assaulted its cameraman.

Crow, however, said “it is astounding to me that individuals from Turning Point USA would wait for an ASU instructor to come out of his class to follow him, harass him and ultimately shove him to the ground, bloodying his face.

“Cowards that they are and so confident in the legality and appropriateness of their actions, the Turning Point USA ‘reporter’ and ‘cameraman’ then ran away from the scene before police arrived.”

In its social media post, Turning Point USA stated it has video footage of the incident and will be willing to share it with authorities as a law enforcement investigation continues.

The group’s statement said Boyles “initiated a physical altercation and attacked our crew.”

It continued: “If our cameraman decides to press criminal charges against Professor Boyles, we will fully support that decision.”

On its website, TPUSA describes its mission "is to educate studentes about the importance of fiscal responsibility, free markets and limited government.

"TPUSA activists are the community organizers of the right."

Arizona Board of Regents Chair Fred DuVal joined Crow in criticizing Turning Point USA, saying it should “be ashamed for its targeted intimidation campaign against university professors, an effort that culminated this week with an ASU instructor – simply walking to his car after class – being shoved to the ground by a pair of Turning Point operatives.

"This organization needs to stop putting people at risk.”
