Women veterans weave history, healing, service into mural

When 56 individual 6-by-6-inch canvases were first laid out across workshop tables in Arizona, they looked like fragments of an unsolved puzzle. Streaks of crimson, delicate floral petals, and intricate brushwork spoke of 56 completely different hands, backgrounds, and military branches.

Yet when assembled, sealed, and framed into a cohesive four-by-four-foot piece, those disparate squares united into a singular patriotic tribute celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. Created entirely by women military veterans through Arizona-based nonprofit HEAL HER Art, the collaborative work touched hearts locally in the city of Peoria, and is now preparing for a permanent home on the national stage.

Supported by a key community grant from the Peoria Arts & Culture Commission, the project was envisioned not only as an artistic milestone for America’s semiquincentennial, but as an intentional parallel to history: 56 women warriors creating art reflecting the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.
