Lake Pleasant in Peoria is a significant hub for the state’s sailing community, but many boaters say the Maricopa Water District has removed a major part of the operation without providing a comparable replacement, leaving the area without needed support.
The district, which manages Pleasant Harbor at the lake, abruptly canceled the lease of Tiller and Kites, the state’s largest sailing operation that is an accredited international sailing school and provides sailboat service, repair, and is a charter provider at Pleasant Harbor Marina.
Officials with MWD have not responded to direct questions about the lease cancellation. In a statement they said the district is trying to maintain its priority as a water provider as its primary purpose while continuing to have amenities available for lake users.
