The Peoria Unified School District will host a factual community information session on school finance and measures on the general election ballot from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the District Administration Center, 6330 W. Thunderbird Road in Glendale, or online on the district’s YouTube and Facebook channels.

The session is free, open to all community members and no registration is required.

Deputy Superintendent of Business Support Services Marcie Rodriguez will explain how Arizona school districts are funded, how Peoria Unified's budget works and what each of the following measures would do:

• Proposition 428, a 13 percent maintenance and operations budget override that would continue the district's current override. Peoria Unified has had a voter-approved override in place since 1996.

• Proposition 429, which asks whether the district may sell, lease or exchange certain district properties including Kachina Elementary School and the District Administration Center.

• Proposition 320, a statewide ballot measure that would require certain school districts to spend at least 60 percent of their operational spending on direct instructional expenses.

The session is intended to help voters understand the facts surrounding each of the measures and how they connect to school funding. It is informational only.

Registered voters within Peoria Unified boundaries will be asked to vote on Propositions 428 and 429 in the Nov. 3 special election. Proposition 320 will appear on ballots statewide. Voters may cast their ballots by mail, vote early or vote in person on Election Day.
