A 4,392-square-foot automotive-detailing building is planned at Superstition Springs Honda in Mesa.
The Mesa Design Review Board voted unanimously Oct. 13 to approve the look and landscaping for the building that is planned about 1,400 feet south of the southwest corner of East Southern Avenue and East Superstition Springs Boulevard. Vice Chair Ryan Circello was absent.
A 10-foot-tall screen wall is planned on the north side of the building, Staff Planner Kwasi Abebrese said before the vote.
“The building will include 10 detail bays and also it will include vehicle display areas on the north and west sides,” he said. “Primary access to the site is from East Auto Park Drive on the north side of the site... Overall a total of 12 parking spaces are required and 12 parking spaces are provided in addition to a total of 399 vehicle-display areas.”
The landscape plan includes trees and shrubs selected from the Superstition Springs Auto Park development plan landscape palette, Abebrese said.
Trees include fruitless olive, evergreen elm, southern live oak, mulga acacia and willow acacia. Shrubs include red yucca, pink muhly grass and dwarf oleander, he said.
Garry Brinkley of John Mahoney Architects LLC is the applicant. SRZ Yuma LLC is the owner.
The Zamora Automotive project will be north of an existing Toyota dealership and west of an existing Honda dealership, according to a written project narrative from John Mahoney Architects.
“The facility will consist of a single one-story detailing building. Automotive detailing will consist of window tinting, pin striping and similar operations. The facility shall provide support to the adjacent existing Honda dealership – owned and operated by Zamora Automotive,” it states. “There will be no public access to the building. Visitors to the building are not anticipated.”
Landscaping along Auto Park Drive will be preserved and additional landscape material will be added as dictated per the Superstition Springs Auto Park development guidelines, it states.
The all-volunteer Mesa Design Review Board is unique in that its composition is set by the zoning ordinance to include two architects; two from other design professions such as landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning, interior design or other design-related background; one contractor or developer; and two residents, according to the city’s website.
