Save The Family to distribute Halloween costumes to people in need

Posted

Mesa-based nonprofit Save The Family Foundation is making ensuring no family is left out of celebrating the spookiest of seasons this year.

From now until Oct. 10, local business, community members and partner organizations can donate Halloween costumes to Save the Family’s headquarters in Mesa as part of the foundation’s ‘Tricks, Treats, and Takeaways’ costume drive.

According to a press release, the goal is to collect 300 costumes, which will be distributed during a family-friendly event on Oct. 22.

Save The Family CEO Robyn Julien said this costume drive helps alleviate the financial stress of Halloween for families involved and lets them enjoy the holiday to its fullest.

“We hear over and over in the news that Halloween tends to become a more and more expensive holiday,” Julien said. “We want all of our families to participate and really enjoy it to the fullest. So getting that new costume is something that’s super fun for kids and we just want to help alleviate some of those expenses.”

The event lasts three hours, and families can select Halloween costumes and also partake in arts, crafts and Halloween treats.

“It will be an opportunity from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for families to stop by with their kids,” Julien said. “Everyone gets to select their Halloween costume and then we have yummy treats, Halloween crafts and things for them to take with them so they can have a wonderful Halloween.”

Julien said donations have poured in so far this year and they are less than 100 costumes away from their goal with plenty of time left before Oct. 10.

“Right now our goal is 300 costumes. We need about 70 or 80 more to reach that goal and that’ll be important,” Julien said. “...All of this is made possible from generous donors like Kiwanis Club of Cave Creek and Desert Financial Credit Union.”

Overall, Julien hopes this event teaches people the value of individual acts of kindness.

“One small act of kindness, like donating a costume or a bag of treats can go so far to help people feel good about themselves,” Julien said. “...By doing something simple like this, it brings a smile to everyone’s face.”
