MESA FIRE STATION

Mesa planning board approves construction of new fire station

Posted

The Mesa Planning and Zoning Board voted to recommend the City Council approve a rezoning for a new city fire and medical station within the 3200 to 3400 blocks of East McDowell Road during its Aug. 14 meeting.

The request changes the 14-acre site north of McDowell Road and west of Val Vista Drive from single-residence to a public and semi-public zoning.

The station will align with the goals of the surrounding area to provide public safety and security, as well as providing support to the nearby Falcon Field Airport, according to a Planning and Zoning Board presentation.

The site plan involves a fire station with four bays, 26 parking spaces and vehicular access provided from McDowell Road. The presentation said staff had been contacting residents in the surrounding neighborhood and had been contacted by one resident with concerns to the specific location.

The seven-member Planning and Zoning Board conducts hearings and makes recommendations to the city council on requests for changes in zoning and on required site plans. It also considers and recommends changes in the city’s long-range plans and in the municipal code concerning planning and zoning matters. Members are appointed for staggered terms of three years.
