Phoenix Symphony could resume performances ‘this month’

Musicians, board and staff report progress in talks following season suspension; fundraising efforts continue

Posted

Less than two weeks ago the Phoenix Symphony’s season came to a sudden halt. Now, ongoing talks indicate possible signs for the music to return to the stage.

The Symphony on Oct. 20 announced it would suspend the remainder of its 2026-27 season following its Nov. 1 performance, citing a financial shortfall that has left the organization unable to meet its operating obligations. The Symphony’s board of directors said the suspension will affect musicians, employees, subscribers and community programs. Unpaid layoffs of musicians began Nov. 2.

Despite increased ticket sales and philanthropic support, the symphony has struggled with persistent operating deficits and mounting financial obligations, according to the Oct. 20 press release.

On Nov. 2, the Symphony’s musicians and its board and staff released a joint statement indicating that talks continue.

“Representatives of the Phoenix Symphony’s Board of Directors, Staff, and Local 586, American Federation of Musicians met today for a respectful, constructive conversation about the Symphony’s future. All participants left the meeting encouraged by the progress made toward our shared goal of returning the orchestra to the stage,” the press release stated.

“The central items discussed included the meaningful fundraising progress made over the past week and a plan to resume performances, possibly as soon as this month. We also agreed that the Symphony Musicians, Board, and Staff will collaborate on fundraising to support the Symphony. We appreciate the spirit of cooperation reflected in today’s critical discussion. Continued dialogue and community support will be essential as we work together to bring live symphonic music back to our audiences and community.”

While a return to performances has not been announced the Symphony was previously scheduled to host “Beethoven’s 7th Symphony & Chopin’s 2nd Piano Concerto” Nov. 6-8, at Symphony Hall, as part of the Jeanne L. Herberger Classical Series.
