Dysart candidate should set a better example for students, reader says

Posted

OPINION — I recently saw a photo that appeared to show Dysart Governing Board candidate William Coniam wearing a “No Kings” shirt.

People are entitled to their political views, including strong opinions about President Trump or any other president. Freedom of speech is fundamental to our country. But school board elections should also prompt a broader conversation about the example elected officials set for students.

We can disagree with a president’s policies, decisions and political philosophy while still teaching young people to respect the institutions of our constitutional republic and the peaceful democratic process.

That distinction matters in our schools.

A governing board member’s responsibility is not to advance a personal political agenda. The job is to oversee the district, establish policy, scrutinize budgets and curriculum, evaluate the superintendent, support teachers and staff, listen to parents and most importantly, keep students at the center of every decision.

This election should be about Dysart students and the future of our district — not national political battles.

I am voting for Dawn Densmore and Lisa Everett. I encourage voters to learn about all of the candidates, ask questions, examine their priorities and decide who they believe will keep the focus on students, parents, teachers, academic achievement and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

Our children deserve a governing board focused on educating them and preparing them for their futures.
