Higley board debates staff travel requests, approves conference trips

Discussion highlights tensions over workload, priorities, student support programs

The Higley Unified School District Governing Board approved several staff travel requests, but not before a lengthy discussion that revealed differing perspectives on professional development, student support programs and classroom priorities.

Board members ultimately approved on April 7 travel for multiple conferences, including training related to behavior management, school recognition programs and student leadership initiatives, with each item passing on unanimous votes.

Much of the discussion centered on whether sending staff to conferences — and potentially bringing back new initiatives — could add to teachers’ already full workloads.
