Higley board approves journalism conference travel over DEI objection

The Higley Unified School District governing board approved nearly $2,000 in travel for a Williams Field High School employee to attend a national journalism convention despite Board Member Anna Van Hoek’s objection to diversity, equity and inclusion programming associated with the event.

The board voted 3-1 Tuesday to approve $1,987.96 for Devon Adams to attend the National High School Journalism Convention in Orlando, Florida, Nov. 19-22. Adams will be a presenter at the convention and participate in professional development.

Van Hoek, who has repeatedly raised concerns about district-paid conference travel when events include DEI-related sessions, asked that the item be pulled for separate discussion.
