Culture, systems, student gains make Canyon Rim 'model school'

Canyon Rim Elementary’s transformation started with a problem school leaders could count: too many students were being sent to the office.

But the Gilbert Public Schools campus did not respond simply by imposing more discipline. Instead, staff members reworked how teachers managed classrooms, how students connected with adults, how behavior expectations were communicated and how academic data was used.

The results helped earn Canyon Rim recognition as a model school and an invitation for a team from the campus to present its approach at the Model Schools Conference in Orlando, Florida.
