A federal funding agreement related to wastewater did not spare Gilbert utility customers from a sharp rate increase, but it could ease future financial burdens on residents, officials said.
The agreement between the town and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, intended to support critical improvements in the reclaimed water system, is designed to enhance the town’s water security and help maintain an aging wastewater infrastructure that has long needed rehabilitation and replacement.
The Gilbert Town Council approved a new wastewater rate structure Feb. 11 set to take effect in April that has customers facing a 95% increase in the wastewater portion of their bills, about $29.
