The Fountain Hills Town Council will discuss Sharia law and automated license plate reading cameras during its Oct. 20 meeting.
Both proposals were brought forth by Councilman Allen Skillicorn in September, with ALPRs making its way onto the Oct. 6 agenda before the council tabled it for further discussion. During that meeting, the item was brought forth for possible action, though the council questioned what the ordinance entailed and legalities of it.
Skillicorn’s proposal regarding Sharia Law will have no action taken during the meeting. The item, however, has already caught the eye of the Council on American-Islamic Relations chapter of Arizona, which sent the town a letter outlining legal and constitutional risks.
The council will also review revisions to its 5G telecommunications and small facilities ordinances, which were also approved in the Oct. 6 meeting.
The body will review and may accept revisions to the final draft of the ordinance with suggestions from both the Planning and Zoning Commission as well as from the first meeting in October. Additions to the final draft include definitions, removed language from the application requirements, a new section pertaining to data-only service facilities, and setbacks and separations.
With approval, the ordinance with all changes will be complete and in place.
Alongside the final 5G ordinance, staff are looking to amend a subdivision ordinance dealing with the need to require new developments to designate places early in the process for the location of future towers and antennas. For any large developments of 50 acres or more, preliminary plats will need to identify and preserve at least one location suitable for a wireless facility or antenna.
The Town Council meets at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, in council chambers at Town Hall, 16705 E. Ave. of the Fountains. The meeting is open to the public. The complete agenda as well as town documents for each item is available for public review at the town website, fountainhillsaz.gov/agendas.
