Surprise Fire staff hosting On Deck meetings

Program meant for aspiring firefighters to meet crew

The Surprise Fire-Medical Department is offering monthly community meetings to aspiring firefighters ages 18 and older.

The program, called On Deck, is a term used for crew waiting for an assignment on an incident. In this case, it offers a no-pressure way to meet, interact and even train with SFMD members while learning more about a career in the fire service.

The first On Deck meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at Fire Station 308, 13771 W. Cactus Road.

These meetings are meant to be casual and interactive. Participants can expect a short presentation by staff that provides an overview of the department and its unique culture, as well as insights into a career in fire service and how to best prepare for testing.

After the presentation, participants will have time to ask questions and interact directly with firefighters and other staff members. This will be followed by a workout that will allow the group to practice the physical fitness skills needed for a successful career in the fire service.

Participants should come dressed in workout attire and plan to stay for the entire two-hour meeting.

Advanced registration is encouraged so staff can plan for attendance levels and have your participation waiver on file.

To register, visit surpriseaz.gov/OnDeck.

Participants are welcome to attend multiple meetings and take advantage of these monthly opportunities. After the initial March event, On Deck meetings will continue to be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at Station 308.
