Surprise council gives boost to 250th birthday party plans

$120,000 approved to promote patriotic events though July 4

Surprise City Manager Bob Wingenroth graduated from West High School in Phoenix right before America celebrated its Bicentennial on July 4, 1976.

And even though decades have passed, he can still remember what a special day it was to experience the U.S. turning 200.

“I still can feel the way right now, even when we had that 50 years ago,” he told the city council on Nov. 18, right before it agreed to spend $120,000 for event planning, programming and activities related to America’s 250th birthday in July.
