Move again puts transgender students in the spotlight

A hot button issue at Peoria Unified School District could get hotter now that the federal government announced civil rights regulations that expand the definition of what qualifies as discrimination on the basis of sex.

For a few years, a battle has been ongoing at Peoria Unified governing board meetings fueled by a group of parents who want bathrooms and locker rooms to be either male or female.

Last year, the governing board voted down drafting policy to address transgender students in bathrooms and locker rooms.
