Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church, 13658 W. Meeker Blvd., will host Dementia Tidbits, a free educational program presented by Hospice of the Valley at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
Attendees will learn practical techniques that can improve communication and reduce frustration, including how to use short, simple phrases, gain a person’s attention respectfully, incorporate visual cues and gestures and avoid interactions that may create anxiety or confusion.
“Many people are surprised to learn that dementia affects much more than memory,” said Julie Killebrew, MSN, Health Education Facilitator at Shepherd of the Hills. “When families understand what’s happening and learn a few simple communication techniques, they often discover ways to reduce frustration and create more positive interactions with the people they love.”
The free program is open to all. To register, call 623-584-2280 or online at shepherdumc.org.
