The Sun City Republican Club hosted a debate/forum Feb. 20 at the Sundial Recreation Center. The evening began with Congresswoman Debbie Lesko giving an update on Washington D.C. She announced she is not running in 2024 for congress but has put her bid into the race for Supervisor, District 4.

The debate forum was moderated by Chris Herring, former Maricopa County Republican chairman. Those participating in the debate/forum were Blake Masters, former U.S. Senate candidate, 2022; Abe Hamadeh, former candidate for Arizona attorney general; Trent Franks, former CD 8 congressman; Anthony Kern, serving in the Arizona Senate; and Ben Toma, speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives.

Asked what are the major concerns to serve CD 8, the candidates agreed that veterans of the West Valley were of major concern; there was a consensus of the importance of finishing the wall; and the U.S. border’s geographical integrity was a concern for the welfare of constituents.

Toma and Kern, both serving in the state government, are faced with the current issues of public education. Toma was able to pass the Empowerment Scholarship allowing parents to choose the best school for their child. He was able to pass the Arizona fair tax in 202C aiding the small businessman. Kern was recently involved with a free speech issue with Arizona State University.

The candidates urged the audience to get involved in the upcoming election, volunteering time and effort to continue to place able-bodied leaders to preserve the nation. The primary date is July 30.

The Feb. 20 meeting finished as Addriene Johnson spoke on an initiative called “Decline to Sign,” warning people not to sign petitions in public places. If enough signatures are garnered it would be on the 2024 ballot, and if passed would become part of the Arizona Constitution.

The next Sun City Republican Club meeting is March 19. The speakers for that evening will be Rachel Mitchell, candidate for Maricopa County attorney, Legislative District 28 candidates, Frank Carroll, for Arizona Senate, Beverly Pingerelli, David Livingston and Susan Black, candidates for the House of Representatives. The meeting is at the Sundial Recreation Center East Hall, 14801 N. 103rd Ave.; social time begins at 6 p.m., the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. The club is open to all RCSC members and their quests.
