RCSC board to open discussion on libraries

Easter holiday delayed response

Members of the Recreation Centers of Sun City board of directors and the general manager met with representatives of the Friends of the Sun City Libraries Wednesday to discuss the future of the Bell and Fairway public libraries.

In a release April 4, the board stated it “sincerely appreciates the avid interest of our membership in our two Sun City libraries,” while reminding its mission statement is “to maintain a financially sustainable corporation which provides our Members with a wide range of high quality amenities, recreational opportunities and social activities to enhance each participating Member’s sense of well-being and purpose. In pursuit of these goals the Board works closely with the Management team, sharing agreement that these words drive everything that we do in Sun City.”

An internal email between the Maricopa County Real Estate Department to the Maricopa County Library District went public March 28 after a general meeting of the board. The email disclosed the RCSC’s intent to only extend the lease for a limited duration in preparation for the closure of the Fairway branch and extend the Bell branch for one year while options for the space and property were evaluated.
