To allow candidates the right to respond to criticisms about their candidacy before Election Day, the last day Independent Newsmedia will publish new election-related letters online is Tuesday, Oct. 27. Candidates may submit a 150-word reply addressing criticisms only and should email them to azopinions@iniusa.org along with their name, address, contact number and the headline of the letter they’re addressing.

OPINION — The United States is in dire need of rescue. That will happen if Democrats win nationwide. What exactly would that look like? Since 2025, the Executive branch has run virtually everything. 

Were Democrats to win the House and Senate, our entire Legislative branch would be back. Congress would resume its oversight role. If the president wants to start a war, build himself a monument, spend taxpayer money to retrofit a plane gifted to him from a foreign government or tear down the Kennedy Center, he would need congressional approval.

If Democrats win, the country would operate on a higher plane. Decency and fair play would return, allowing Americans to rise above the wrecking ball currently in Washington. Democrats would ensure government would no longer wreck NATO, sell out Ukraine, foster revenge politics or undercut our elections. 

Democrats would halt government brutality toward the American people. We know U.S. and world history. It was illegal to harbor enslaved people seeking freedom. It was illegal to hide Jewish families during the Holocaust. In those times, the so-called “criminals” were the ones helping people.

Today, instead of criminalizing helping people who seek a better life, why not prosecute those who unlawfully arrest U.S. citizens or who execute unarmed civilians?         

While Democrats will not defund the halting of illegal immigration, they will not fund government brutality.  

Our government now borrows money to pay for tax cuts for billionaires, yet it carries a budget deficit we have to pay. This is similar to maxing out your credit cards then asking others to loan you money to pay your monthly statements.

Democrats want more money in middle class pockets, not help for fat cats building megamillion-dollar mansions in Palm Beach at our expense.

With accountability, compassion and fiscal responsibility Democrats would rescue this nation. That rescue is urgently needed.
