Massey: Libraries needed in all communities

Posted

I was shocked and outraged to find out that RCSC plans to close our libraries. After more than 3 years of howling from pickleball users about the possibility of losing a couple of courts for a couple of years during a rec center update, finding out that the general manager and RCSC board planned to close our libraries with no notice or discussion is despicable.

Libraries are needed in all communities, but I think in Sun City even more so. Access to free books, computers, movies, education, puzzles, and meeting places are essential. Many of our citizens are living on Social Security alone. They cannot afford to purchase all the books they may want to read or to purchase a computer for themselves. The educational opportunities offered help expand horizons.

Libraries were important enough to the Sun City community that before Maricopa took over our libraries Sun City had a subscription library. People paid a yearly fee to have access to free books and computers.

Shame on the RCSC board and the manager, who thought that closing off these opportunities without even any notice was a good idea.
