Valley Vista student, Willow Canyon teacher earn honors

Valley Vista Culinary Arts student Tyler Wylie won first place at the Arizona Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) in the “Front of the House’ Culinary Arts competition.

Valley Vista Culinary Arts student Tyler Wylie took home first place at the Arizona Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) in the “Front of the House’ Culinary Arts competition. In addition, Wylie also won a $1,000 scholarship to Johnson & Wales University which focuses on culinary arts.

Stephen Goodman also won gold (and an invite to Nationals) in Job Interview competition. Valley Vista High School had four participants in this year’s event with all four placing in their respective competitions.

FCCLA is a national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Dysart CTE programs like Culinary Arts utilize FCCLA to ensure opportunities for students to highlight their skills statewide and nationally.

At the 2016-2017 SWD Key Club District Convention in El Paso, Texas, Willow Canyon Key Club advisor Anna Flores received the Susan B. Poland Key Club Advisor of the Year Award.

The award is based on her Key Club members recommendations, as well as the recommendations of the her sponsoring Kiwanis Club and judged by the Southwest District Key Club and Kiwanis Administrators. This years award was presented by Bob Kitchen, long time Dysart employee and co-sponsor of the Dysart High School Key Club, who received the award last year.

The award was renamed after the late Dysart High School Physics teacher and Key Club Advisor, Susan Poland, who dedicated over 30 years to Kiwanis, Key Club and her Dysart High Key Club.

The Willow Canyon Key Club also placed first in the non-digital poster award competition that was created by Patricia Florez. The Wildcats also submitted their annual achievement report for this year and received first place for the club’s service work this school year and was named a distinguished club by the Southwest Key Club District.
