Phoenix needs ‘first line of defense’ to reach Super Bowl goal

Phoenix officials are offering Valley residents a chance to say they were part of the Super Bowl in a different way.
The city needs volunteers to help Phoenix reach its goal of a zero-waste Super Bowl.
The Environmental Protection Agency considers “zero waste” to be diverting at least 90% of waste away from landfills.
Phoenix’s goal for Super Bowl LVII is 92% waste diversion, “which would make it the greenest Super Bowl yet,” city officials said in a release.
“With 2,000 tons of waste expected to come from Super Bowl events, we need Zero Waste Ambassadors to help make sure food waste gets composted and recyclables get recycled,” Alexis Yaple, Phoenix’s zero waste coordinator, said.
“They will be the first line of defense, so to speak, as they prevent as much waste as possible from going to the landfill.”
Zero Waste Ambassadors will be stationed at nearby trash and recycle containers in the downtown Phoenix area.
Duties may include:
Educating people about what is recyclable and compostable.
Ensuring individuals place items in the correct containers.
Monitoring containers and reporting fill levels to Public Works staff.
Reporting littering or other issues to Public Works staff.
Conducting any other pertinent duties to ensure the event reaches its zero waste goal.
