Man shot by Glendale Police after allegedly pulling weapon booked in jail

Posted

Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, the Glendale Police Department received multiple calls of a male subject behaving erratically in the 6500 block of West Sierra Street.

According to the callers, this man was observed to have a gun.

Glendale Police officers responded to assess the situation and ultimately attempted to approach the man.  Before officers arrived, the male subject entered a four-door sedan and began travelling westbound on Sierra Street.  At the same time, one of the involved officers was travelling eastbound on Sierra in a fully marked police vehicle.

According to Glendale Police, as the officer and the male subject approached each other, the police officer observed the man point a firearm in the direction of the officer.  The officer fired his duty weapon at the man multiple times, striking him in the arm.

Only one officer, described as a five-year veteran of the Glendale Police Department, fired his duty weapon, and a second officer witnessed the incident.  Both officers are uninjured.

The officers removed the man from the vehicle and began providing life saving measures. The suspect was later identified as 24-year-old Martell Hare, Jr.

Hare was transported to the hospital where he is in stable condition.

As a member of the West Valley Incident Response Team, the Surprise Police Department has assumed the investigation into this Glendale Police Department officer-involved shooting.

According to a report released by the Surprise Police Department, during a post-Miranda interview, Hare stated he intended to induce an officer-involved shooting, expressing his desire to die.

Hare was booked into the Maricopa County Intake and Release Jail on the following charges: two counts of aggravated assault, endangerment, disorderly conduct involving weapons, and possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor.
