Peoria primed for better fiber-optic broadband service

City staff working on new rules, regulations for installing fiber in rights-of-way

As fiber-optic broadband becomes essential for rapid, high-quality data transmission for both business and personal use, the city of Peoria is moving into the fast lane.

Deputy City Manager Mike Faust said residents and businesses have asked for more broadband internet options, and multiple providers have approached the city regarding the installation of fiber-optic communications systems throughout Peoria.

The industry is currently not directly regulated at the local level, so many cities regulate fiber optics through telecommunication licenses, which does not adequately account for the fiber-optic technology, infrastructure and business model, Faust said.
