Police identify suspect in Glendale officer-involved shooting

A 26-year-old man has been identified as the suspect in a shooting that involved a Glendale officer, police said Monday.
Gohan Kancab has been charged with aggravated assault with a simulated weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct involving weapons and shoplifting.
The incident occurred just aftert 3:30 p.m. April 28 when officers from the Glendale Police Department responded to the area of North 51st and West Myrtle avenues for a reported shoplifting.
As officers were on their way, according to a release, further information was received indicating the suspect was armed and waving a gun around as he left the store.
“A patrol officer in a fully marked Glendale Police Department vehicle located the suspect near a bus stop. The officer gave verbal commands to the suspect, who failed to obey and proceeded to point a simulated firearm in the direction of the officer,” the release stated.
The officer fired multiple times at the suspect, striking him in the left shoulder, police said.
Officers provided medical aid to the suspect, who was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The officer involved in the shooting is a two-year veteran of the Glendale Police Department, with 11 years of law enforcement service. The officer’s body-worn camera and dash camera were activated and recorded the incident, according to the release.
No one else was injured, police said.
As a member of the West Valley Incident Response Team, the Surprise Police Department has assumed the investigation.
