From The Editor: Opinions page a key element of DNS

Some readers may not realize the “letter to the editor” is still a valuable thing. The opinions section of the Daily News-Sun ranks among our highest priorities as your daily newspaper.

The Independent Newsmedia mission statement reads: Our mission is to provide the information and understanding citizens need to make intelligent decisions about public issues. In doing so, we strive to report the news with honesty, accuracy, fairness, objectivity, fearlessness and compassion.

As such, our news reporting is vital to the success of our newspapers and you will find our staff-written news articles by Cecilia Chan, Mark Carlisle and Chris Caraveo on the front page of the newspaper each day.

These articles report on important issues and we strive to meet the expectations of our company mission and the interests of our readers, as well as the tenets of journalistic ethics, in everything we print. In the past few weeks, our front-page articles have covered a wide range of topics — the upcoming monsoon season, the Equal Rights Amendment, Glendale electronic signs, transportation projects, water safety, IKEA’s decision not to build in the West Valley, the Red For Ed fight for higher teacher salaries, and more.

But news coverage of such issues is just a starting point for discussion and community participation. My greatest desire as the newspaper’s editor is for you to take ownership in these opinion pages, both as a reader and — when an issue touches or concerns you — as a writer as well.

It could not be simpler to submit a letter to the editor. The easiest way is to send an email to me at mloeschman@newszap.com. For those who prefer to send a traditional letter, it can be mailed to Daily News-Sun, 17220 N. Boswell Boulevard Suite L-101, Sun City AZ, 85373.

These letters, along with our daily Valley Voices and guest commentaries, will continue to make DNS opinions one of our readers’ favorite pages.
