The Arizona Registrar of Contractors received notification a set of repeat unlicensed offenders are back targeting and victimizing homeowners in Sun City and Sun City West. The agency is currently collaborating with Property Owners Residents Association in Sun City West and Sun City Homeowners Association to hold two upcoming community meetings in order to provide a public safety seminar educating residents about how to stay safe from these unlicensed contracting scams.
A forum for the community will take place 9 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, at the Property Owner and Residence Association, 13815 W. Camino Del Sol. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors will provide scam information.
Ongoing labor and material shortages exacerbated by the pandemic and a variety of other factors have led to additional pressures and delays in an already strained construction market. As a result, homeowners hoping to have projects completed with a reasonable price tag or within a short time frame may feel pressured to hire unlicensed entities, who often make promises never intended to keep and leave projects unfinished, in shambles, or never even started.
The organization commonly receives complaints where an unlicensed entity goes door-to-door claiming to notice a needed repair on the property. These unlicensed individuals often promise cheap or discounted repairs made with “leftover” materials and pressure homeowners by stating the repair is needed immediately to prevent further damage. In many cases, they will allege having just performed work for a neighbor. Regardless of whatever these door-to-door solicitors may offer. Always do their research before hiring a contractor.
Some of the many benefits of hiring an appropriately licensed contractor are access to a regulated complaint resolution process and the opportunity to file a claim with the Recovery Fund, a form of financial protection provided by licensed Arizona residential contractors to residential homeowners when certain conditions are met. These pathways to resolving workmanship and abandonment disputes between contractors and homeowners are not available to you if you hire someone who does not hold an AZ ROC license.
