Arizona Corporation Commission members aren't our friends

Sun City West reader agrees with letter that EPCOR rate hike proposal isn’t acceptable

Posted

OPINION — In the world of utility rate cases, the main players are the utility companies and the Arizona Corporation Commission, the ACC. After careful review of the pros and cons of the application, the final determination is made by the ACC.

A recent letter by Jim Scanlan in the Independent, EPCOR’s rate hikes unacceptable, is spot on regarding the proposed hike of 20% for Sun City West.

Remember the wastewater rate case a few years ago? We thought our proposal of a three-tiered system: Residential, industrial and commercial, would keep the Sun City West wastewater rate increase at about 9% instead of the proposed 20% increase. Well surprise, surprise, not only did commissioners agree with the three-tiered system, they increased our rate by 20% in favor of the utility!

As Mr. Scanlan noted, two of the commissioners that voted for the outrageous 20% hike are now on the ballot for reelection. Commissioners Myers and Thompson are not our friends.
