Each November for the last 12 years, the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships brings out fans of fashion, food, cars, dogs and a day of world-class polo.

This year, a few new items are on the ticket for what organizers call America’s most-attended polo event.

“It’s really a lifestyle event is what it’s become,” Jason Rose said, founder and owner of the long-running polo party. “When you look at the sponsors, exotic cars, the fashion shows, the dog fashion shows, it’s polo and a whole lot more.”

Held at WestWorld of Scottsdale Saturday, Nov. 4, the gates for the 12th annual polo party open at 9:45 a.m. with events running through the afternoon to the grand finale at 4 p.m., for the inaugural Sunset Concert.

Scottsdale Burning Man

As a brand-new offering, Rose is introducing a one-of-a-kind concert by partnering with Walter Productions, a Phoenix-based immersive experience company whose projects have been popping up across the Valley for more than a decade, spawning public spaces such as the local brewery called the Walter Station, an event venue called the Walter Where?House and a non-profit educational learning space for kids and teens called the Walter Hive.

Distinguished by its bright EDM lighting and dramatic staging, Walter Productions will bring out its “Kalliope” stage to hoist a soon-to-be-named Grammy-nominated DJ for the Sunset Concert.

“We always try to do things that you can’t find anywhere else. And I guarantee you, a Burning Man approach to concerts is something that’s probably never been done at a polo event anywhere in the world,” Rose said.

Also new this year is an expanded wine-tasting experience, an organized event entitled the Million Dollar Mingle created by former NFL player, AC Caswell, and a VIP culinary offering by Maple & Ash, the acclaimed Scottsdale steakhouse run by two-Michelin-star Chef Danny Grant.

For car collectors and admirers, the polo party will have more than 200 exotic cars on display from the title sponsor, Bentley Scottsdale, Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale Maserati, Arizona Porsche Club and others.

The king’s polo team

Patroned by King Charles himself, the Wales Polo Team has attended the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships since 2012. Captaining the team is Ricky Cooper who has played with both of the king’s sons on many occasions.

Hailing from West London in the village of Sunningdale where polo is played at state-of-the-art facilities, Cooper has admittedly built quite an affinity for the people of Scottsdale.

“I’m just so happy to be out here every year representing now King Charles, representing the country’s polo club,” Cooper said. “Bentley of Scottsdale sponsors the event each year and there’s something there for everybody. Loads of shops, loads of stalls, just a really great time, never any trouble, just good-natured people wanting to see a good day out.”

Led by Cooper, the Wales Polo Team will fight for the 2023 Molina Cup against an undefeated Aspen Valley Polo Team as the signature match of the day at 2:30 p.m.

Representing Arizona polo is Diego Florez, president of the Arizona Polo Club, who will lead his team in a match against the USA Women’s All-Star team at 12:15 p.m.

As a longtime polo player, Florez wants to bring polo to a more visible space within the City of Phoenix while providing an alternative equestrian discipline. He’s done this by starting the Scottsdale Polo Academy, which invites anyone interested in the game of polo to learn from professional polo instructors in a welcoming space.

Scottsdale Polo Academy will conclude the day’s polo events in a 3:45 p.m. match against newcomers, the New Orleans Polo Club.

On Nov. 4, the polo games will be surrounded by non-stop events for its fans, who last year numbered just over 12,000. A month out from the event, Rose said he is currently 45% ahead of ticket sales compared to last year, a promising sign for an event that plans to bring even more for its dedicated fan base.

As he prepares for his time stateside, Ricky Cooper said he looks forward to taking in the afternoon light off the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and all that the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships has to offer.

“Just before the game, they usually play the national anthem and when you’re out there every year and the sun’s beating down on you and you look around, see the mountains, see the big crowd, I don’t think there’s a better feeling,” Cooper said. “I’m being serious. It’s the best polo event in the world.”

WestWorld of Scottsdale is located at 16601 N Pima Rd. Tickets start at $45. Tickets, tables, tailgating information and a schedule of events can be found at ThePoloParty.com or by calling 480-423-1414.
