Sunday, June 1, marked a monumental milestone in Scottsdale’s history as we celebrate the complete funding and debt repayment for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
This day signifies more than just a financial milestone. It symbolizes our unwavering commitment to preserving the natural beauty and heritage of our beloved Scottsdale. Every acre purchased, every trail built and every dollar invested has led us to this point.
Today, all 30,500 acres, or 48 square miles — more than 25% of our city’s total acreage — is fully owned by the citizens of Scottsdale. This vast expanse of pristine Sonoran Desert, a treasure beyond measure, belongs to the people of Scottsdale.
In order to truly appreciate the scale of this investment it is to be proud to think of the 11 trailheads that serve as gateways, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore over 230 miles of non-motorized trails.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is not just land, it is a living, breathing part of Scottsdale’s identity.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve and all its assets are, now and forever, the unencumbered property of the citizens of Scottsdale where it is held in trust for the enjoyment of both current and future generations. This means our children, and their children, will have the opportunity to experience the same breathtaking landscapes and diverse ecosystems that we cherish today.
We are safeguarding not just land but our quality of life and the spirit of our city.
As mayor, I am honored to witness this momentous occasion. I am gratified by everyone who has contributed to making this dream a reality.
