Scottsdale’s senior citizens are being overlooked

OPINION — A quick look through recent editions of our community newspaper leaves a distinct impression: older adults in Scottsdale are viewed primarily as consumers for healthcare products and retirement services.

While advertising has its place, our local coverage rarely reflects the actual lives, contributions and voices of the seniors who live here.

According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, approximately 26.4% of Scottsdale’s population is 65 years or older. That is more than 64,000 residents — well above the national average of 18.9%. Furthermore, we are one of the most active older populations in the country, with over 20% of our seniors continuing to participate in the local workforce.
