OPINION — I'm a Scottsdale Unified dad with three kids in the district. I spent countless hours as PTO president at Redfield Elementary, and I still have a child there. Redfield will likely be affected by the Phase 2 closures, and believe me, that is heartbreaking. But I care more about the future of public education in Scottsdale. We have to do what's best for our kids and our community into the future.
I've heard some parents who are upset about the closures say they might vote no on the $375 million bond. Please don't. A bond is not an override, and it doesn't decide which schools close. Bond money can only pay for buildings: roofs, air conditioning, plumbing, safety and technology at the schools we already have.
The recent rains sent water through roofs and into classrooms, plenty of bathrooms were busted long before that, and an aging HVAC system breakdown sent kids home early last week and several times last spring. The schools that stay open will still have those problems.
