The Peoria Unified School District shows growth with eight schools moving up one letter grade and a total of 16 schools that are “A” labeled.
The A-F letter grades were released by the Arizona State Board of Education, and the formula that determines school labels uses a wide range of academic measures, including results from the AzMERIT test and academic growth.
Peoria Elementary School, 11501 N. 79th Ave., saw the most growth, moving from a “D” label in 2017-18 to a “B” label for the 2018-19 school year.
This year was also the first for school labels for alternative schools, and the Peoria Flex Academy, 11200 N. 83rd Ave., scored a “B” label.
Throughout the school year, there are many ways teachers assess how students are doing in the classroom, including classwork, homework, quizzes, projects and teacher and counselor observations about individual student growth. The district also measures soft skills such as students’ ability to communicate, collaborate and think critically.
