A 16-year-old who authorities said shot at an off-duty Mesa police officer working security and at a private security guard during an Oct. 10 altercation at the Versalles Reception Hall in Mesa has been indicted on attempted murder charges.
Jesus Daniel Felix Lomeli Figueroa, 16, was indicted on counts of attempting to commit first-degree and second-degree murder, aggravated assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm and minor with a firearm.
The incident began when Figueroa attempted to enter the reception hall where a private event was taking place, but he was denied entry, police said.
Authorities allege he pointed a handgun at the security guard and fired at him.
“After apparently shooting at the security guard, Figueroa ran towards a vehicle. In response, both the security guard and the off-duty officer followed behind him and discharged their firearms at him,” a Mesa Police Department release stated.
Under Arizona law, police said, a juvenile may be publicly named when charged with first-degree murder because the state automatically prosecutes juveniles aged 15, 16 or 17 as adults for major violent felonies.
