Two people were injured early Saturday morning after being shot during an altercation with an off-duty Mesa officer and security guard outside the Versalles Reception Hall, police said.
The shooting occurred about 1:05 a.m. Oct. 10 near Main Street and Stapley Drive after a juvenile male attempted to enter the reception hall where a private event was taking place, police said, adding he was denied entry.
“The juvenile then pointed a handgun at the security guard and fired at him,” a Mesa Police Department release stated.
The suspect ran toward a vehicle, and the guard and officer followed and shot at the juvenile who then ran south across Main Street, where he was met by an on-duty officer, police said.
“During the encounter, the juvenile removed a handgun and threw it to the ground before being taken into custody,” the release stated.
He sustained apparent gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A man who was inside the vehicle that police said was associated with the juvenile was also struck by gunfire. He, too, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No one else was injured, and no identities have been released.
The Scottsdale Police Department is leading the shooting investigation as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, a multi-agency partnership responsible for investigating critical incidents involving law enforcement officers.
The Mesa Police Department is investigating the aggravated assault case that led up to the shooting incident.
