The Queen Creek Unified School District is committed to preparing its students not just for academic success, but also for life after graduation.
Eastmark High School's Bird’s Nest store is a perfect example of how the district provides students with the tools, experiences and opportunities they need to thrive in the real world.
This student-led store at the Mesa school, stocked with drinks and snacks, is an integral part of the district’s CTE (Career and technical education) program. Led by Eastmark marketing teacher and DECA adviser Frank Norris, the store has become a hands-on learning environment where students can apply the skills they’ve developed in the classroom to real-world situations.
By taking ownership of every aspect of the store’s operations — from inventory to customer service — students gain valuable insights into business management, finance and leadership. This type of experiential learning allows students to see the direct connection between what they study and the practical skills they will need for future success.
More than just a business venture, Bird’s Nest is a community hub where students collaborate, problem-solve and learn by doing. It has been incredibly rewarding for students to see their hard work come to life, along with the growth of relationships within their team. This spirit of collaboration and teamwork is exactly what QCUSD strives to instill in students across the district.
By reinvesting the store’s profits back into the DECA program, students have the opportunity to participate in state and international competitions where they can showcase their skills, build valuable networks, and gain exposure to a wide range of opportunities.
DECA’s mission is to prepare high school and college students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
Looking ahead, Bird’s Nest has plans to expand its offerings and engage with the local community. By involving local businesses and community members, students gain even more exposure to real-world challenges and opportunities.
QCUSD believes in cultivating talent, building character and providing every student with the opportunity to excel. The Bird’s Nest is just one of the many ways the district is striving to prepare students for life after high school by giving them the tools and confidence to shape their own futures.
Erin McRae is the director of college and career readiness and CTE.
