A permit was recently approved to modify a comprehensive sign plan for Dink and Dine — a pickleball court, bar and restaurant in Mesa.

The Mesa Board of Adjustment voted 5-0 June 4 as part of a consent agenda with other items to approve the permit for the 3-acre development at 1017 and 1065 N. Dobson Road. Board members Nicole Lynam and Gerson Barrera were absent.

Both 1017 and 1065 N. Dobson Road are connected by a freestanding structure, Staff Planner Sergio Solis said during a study session prior to the meeting.

“So the site functions as one big development,” he said. “Underneath the canopy would be pickleball courts. To your right you would have ball courts, on the left dining.”

Mark Sanchez is the applicant. Sachs Ranch Co. LLC/Hurley Land Co. LLC is the owner.

The Dink and Dine development is in an entertainment district and the proposed sign plan is similar to the number and size of signs in the area including at Cinemark and Bass Pro, according to written project narrative.

“The approval of the Dink and Dine package will fill a void of an empty building in the center that brings many patrons in the center for health and fun activities. It is also to be noted that (the) south elevation was previously the rear of building and now being repurposed as main entrance,” it states. “The development site contains unique physical conditions including the large size of building and setback from the roadways limiting visibility and recognition to the property and its use.”

The seven-member Board of Adjustment conducts public meetings to hear and decide requests for variances, special-use permits and interpretations of the city of Mesa zoning ordinance and sign code. Members are appointed for staggered terms of three years, according to the city’s website.
