A comprehensive plan with three electronic message marquee signs for a recreational facility north of the northeast corner of Ellsworth and Pecos roads was recently approved by the Mesa Board of Adjustment.
The board voted unanimously in a consent agenda with other items March 2 to approve a special use permit for the sign plan in the light industrial and leisure and recreation districts. Absent from the meeting was Chair Alexis Wagner.
Three monument signs are being sought, Staff Planner Kellie Rorex said at a study session prior to the meeting.
“A lot of development has already occurred at the site,” she said. “The proposed [comprehensive sign plan] is for three monument signs to exceed the 12 feet that is permitted in the Mesa zoning ordinance. The maximum height requested is 30 feet, which is for the top of the design structure; the actual sign copy — the top of that — is at 26 feet.”
The applicant also is seeking an increase in sign area from the 80 square feet permitted per sign to 490 square feet for a double-faced sign, she said.
Legacy Sports USA has completed the development and design of a sports entertainment park facility combining athletics, sports and entertainment into one destination center. The signs — branding landmarks — are needed at the entrances to the sports park along Ellsworth Road and Williams Field Road, both major arterial streets, according to a written project narrative.
“The unique nature of Legacy Sports Park, as a one-of-a-kind facility in the city of Mesa and in the Phoenix Metro Area, warrants a customized approach to signage to support the operational needs of the park,” the narrative states. “The proposed three electronic message marquee signs are designed with a similar color and materials palette ... along with a contemporary/modern architectural vernacular that complements the existing buildings’ architecture. The proposed signs will create a unified architectural statement at the entrances to the sports park.
Mesa Board of Adjustment meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month at the City Council Chambers, 57 E. First St. The seven-member board conducts public meetings to hear and decide requests for variances, special-use permits and interpretations of the city of Mesa zoning ordinance and sign code. Members are appointed for staggered terms of three years, according to the city’s website.
