Mesa residents looking to celebrate Independence Day are in luck this Friday.
Those living in the heart of the city can enjoy the annual Willmeng Arizona Celebration of Freedom 6-10 p.m. on July 4 at the Mesa Convention Center, 263 N. Center St. The event features various entertainment options and patriotic activities, including:
• Live music at Stage America on the grass near Center and Second Streets
• The Salute to America program at 9:15 p.m. on Stage America, followed up by the Fireworks Extravaganza at 9:30 p.m.
• Catch a pro wrestling show at the Mesa Ampitheatre as Phoenix Championship Wrestling Presents SLAMU, a family-friendly showcase.
• Let Freedom Ring Laser Light Show inside the Mesa Convention Center. Three 20-minute shows featuring laser displays, photos and patriotic music at 7, 8, and 9 p.m.
• The Patriotic Superhero Stunt Show features professional BMX stunt riders performing jumps and stunts on ramps near the All-American Food Court.
• The All-American Food Court is mist-chilled and offers beer, soda, water and food.
• Mesa Convention Center hosts Historic Flags of the U.S. at 6:30, 7:15, 8 and 8:45 p.m. The hall showcases flags from every state and U.S. territory.
• The Fallen Soldier Memorial inside the Mesa Convention center honors fallen Arizona soldiers from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
• There will be a naturalization ceremony at 5 p.m. inside the Mesa Convention Center that features up to 100 people from 41 countries taking their oath of citizenship.
• Tailgate Zone on the grass next to Stage America features games for people of all ages such as basketball toss, football throw, soccer kick and cornhole.
• Yankee Doodle Kid’s Zone features face painting and free carnival-style games for kids.
Those who live in Eastmark have their own July 4 events to enjoy. Eastmark is holding its celebration on the multipurpose field on the southeast corner of Inspirian Parkway and Point Twenty-Two Boulevard, north of he baseball fields and dog parks.
Festivities kick off at 7 p.m. with a patriotic ceremony featuring a Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem performed by an Eastmark community member. At 8 p.m., residents can compete in the watermelon eating contest open to everyone ages 3 and up sponsored by Michelle Colbert and Wood & Rise Real Estate Group. Festivities conclude at 8:45 p.m. as residents can grab a seat on the lawn north of the ball fields for the best view of the fireworks show.
