East Valley Academy to establish robotics program after MPS approves $35K grant

Posted

East Valley Academy will soon establish a robotics program after the Mesa Public Schools Governing Board approved a request for a $35,000 grant during its July 23 meeting.

This proposal was brought forth by former East Valley Academy Principal Dr. Justine Pilar and current math teacher Mariano Arteaga, who requested said grant from Meta Mesa Data Center, which would fund robotics equipment, professional learning and competition fees.

The school is at 855 W. Eighth Ave in Mesa.

In the board documents, the requesters said the robotics program would provide a hands-on learning experience in STEM that will also open the door to future opportunities in that field. The documents state that the program would align with the board goal of increasing the graduation rate and igniting a culture of learning.

“East Valley Academy seeks to establish a Robotics Program designed to inspire and engage our students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This program will aim to provide hands-on learning experiences that will enhance students’ problem-solving skills, creativity and teamwork,” the document states. “This grant will allow us to invest in the robotics program to provide our students with a transformative educational experience that will open doors to future opportunities in STEM fields. The hands-on learning and collaborative environment will not only enhance their technical skills but also build their confidence and aspiration.”

The grant was approved as part of a multi-item consent agenda that passed 5-0 during the July 23 meeting.

A board document stated key objectives of the program including STEM education enhancement, skill development and career readiness. The document also mentioned phases of implementation that would entail purchasing equipment, training teachers and staff on how to use and integrate robotics kits into the curriculum, and launching the program in time for the 2024-25 school year with an introductory workshop as well as coursework and preparation for local and regional competitions.

MUSD — also known as Mesa Public Schools — is the largest public school district in Arizona and has six high schools, nine junior high schools, 55 elementary schools and 18 choice and success schools.
