Construction at Queen Creek Unified’s new Mesa school advances

Posted

Construction is well underway at the Queen Creek Unified School District’s 10th elementary school set to open in July.

Located in Mesa, Mountain Trail Academy will span 90,000 square feet and serve students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Interior texture and painting of classroom buildings are in progress, exterior color finishes are being applied, and the structural framing of the administration building is complete.

The campus is designed with facilities that include:

  • 38 classrooms and open collaboration spaces
  • A science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) lab
  • Media/technology center
  • Music and orchestra rooms
  • Multipurpose room with a performance platform
  • Three play areas and a playground
  • A full-service kitchen

Additionally, the school will provide a two-to-one student-to-Chromebook ratio, providing students with access to technology to enhance their educations.

Mountain Trail Academy’s curriculum will include Leader in Me, a pre-K–12 program aimed at fostering student leadership, nurturing a culture of trust and enhancing academic success “by empowering students, educators and families with essential leadership and life skills,” according to a QCUSD press release.

The school will also have Project Lead the Way, a curriculum that works to equip teachers with tools to create STEM-focused learning environments where students can engage in hands-on problem-solving and critical thinking, the release continued.

“We are committed to preparing students not just for the challenges of today, but for the opportunities of tomorrow,” Erin Pillsbury, the school’s principal stated in the release. “Our innovative STEAM focus empowers students to think critically, solve complex problems and collaborate effectively — skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.”

Mountain Trail Academy will also offer free all-day kindergarten, before-and-after-school enrichment classes, and programs in physical education, music and computer science.
